By Word of Mouth’s newest venue partner, the Design Museum, reopened in its Grade II listed new home in Kensington in November 2016 and has made its mark with exhibitions that celebrate contemporary design in every form from architecture and fashion to graphics, product and industrial design.
We are so excited that By Word of Mouth’s selection as an accredited caterer at the Design Museum comes just as one of its most anticipated exhibitions, Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier has opened to great acclaim.
Conceived and co-curated with Monsieur Alaïa prior to his death in November 2017, the exhibition examines the work of one of the most respected fashion designers in history, presenting the exhibits as the designer himself intended – grouping the designs to provide a narrative into the ethos and approach of this maverick of haute couture. Over 60 outstanding examples of Azzedine Alaïa’s work sit alongside photography and personal quotes providing an extraordinary insight into the designer’s incredible attention to detail and quest for perfection.
We have all witnessed the huge impact on fashion of pieces such as the bandage dress and zipped dress but this exhibition places a magnifying glass on the meticulous design process that meant Alaïa would work on certain pieces for years at a time and would display his creations when they were ready, not when the fashion season dictated. To anyone intrigued by the process of fashion design or simply in love with the timeless beauty of haute couture, this is an exhibition that will fascinate, delight and inform.
