By Word of Mouth Caters the Opening Party for Barbie®: The Exhibition
Barbie summer hit London at the beginning of July as Barbie®: The Exhibition opened at BWoM venue partner, The Design Museum, appropriately located on High Street Ken.
The excitement at BWoM HQ was off the charts when we learnt we had been selected to provide the catering for the opening party for such a headline grabbing exhibition and celebration of an icon.
The creative vision was unsurprisingly dominated by the colour pink, with bars, flowers, lighting, DJ booth and themed photo backdrops all combining to reflect the Barbie brand whilst infusing the night with a playful personality and great sense of fun. Our menu of delicious vegetarian Kenapes, (an ongoing pun that we love here at BWoM), reflected the vision for the evening and had a focus on reducing the environmental impact of the event which which was important to everyone involved with this exciting launch event.
From miso broccoli, pulled jackfruit taco and plant-based slider to a pecorino & peach cornetto and courgette & tomato tarte fine, the Kenapes brought bold flavours and fun to match the tone of the evening. They were circulated on our eye catching, Barbie branded presentation trays by a team of service staff proudly wearing pink t-shirts emblazoned with the Barbie logo.
Guests enjoyed perfectly chilled Nyetimber English sparkling wine, the Design Museum’s exclusive English sparkling wine partner, posed for photos in the Barbie doll box, and soaked up the fabulously flamboyant party atmosphere before heading into the exhibition to grab a sneak preview of the amazing items on display.

What to Expect from Barbie®: The Exhibition
Offering a deep dive into the design evolution of the world’s most popular doll, Barbie®: The Exhibition presents over 250 items, including a rare, first edition ‘No 1 Barbie‘, launched back in 1959 at the American International Toy Fair in New York. Dressed in a black & white bathing suit and cat’s eye sunglasses, the original Barbie doll represents the birth of an icon, paving the way for a long line of dolls and accessories produced across the 6.5 ensuing decades.
The exhibition is not just about the dolls. Visitors are offered an intriguing insight into the design process, the lifestyle and accessories (including an impressive array of cars and dreamhouses), and the development of the product range to embrace diversity and inclusion. Without giving too much away, you can also expect Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster film of 2023, Barbie to feature whilst, of course, Ken also gets a look in with his own dedicated section.
Barbie®: The Exhibition is at The Design Museum until 23rd February 2025.
